Legal ceremony in Iceland: Everything you need to know


Planning a wedding in Iceland can be an exciting and memorable experience, and we’re here to help you make it happen! Iceland has quickly become one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world, and it’s for sure for a reason! :)

SO YOU DECIDED TO ELOPE IN ICELAND

Not only is it a beautiful vacation spot, but getting married in Iceland is also a straightforward process with some fantastic options for all types of ceremonies. Yes, you heard it correctly, any kind of ceremony is legal here in Iceland! 

You can have religious, pagan, traditional and humanist ceremonies and all of these will be legal! And what is even more unique — you can have the ceremony in any epic outdoor spot, like a waterfall, glacier, black sand beach. 

Ceremonies can be performed for every religion, nationalities and same-sex marriages are legal. Plus, your wedding photos from Iceland will be breathtaking!

HERE’S LIST OF DOCUMENTS YOU NEED TO GET MARRIED IN ICELAND: 

First and foremost, both parties must be at least 18 years old and not currently married.

​​All documents submitted must be original, and if they’re not in English or any of the Scandinavian languages, they must be translated simultaneously.

For those planning a legal marriage in Iceland, these essential documents required:

  • a marriage notification form 
  • both birth certificates, 
  • a certificate of marital status to show that you’re not currently married (has to be issued 8 weeks prior your wedding date)
  •  If either party has been divorced or is a widower, additional documents are also necessary. 
  • both valid passports

All documents should be submitted at least 3 weeks before the wedding. 

Lifehack: Submit fist scanned copies by email and bring physical documents once you get to Iceland!

We recommend carefully reviewing all the rules and requirements and making a checklist to ensure that everything is completed on time.

After the ceremony, you can obtain a wedding certificate in English from the National Registry, making it easy to register your marriage back home.

But don’t worry, the legal process doesn’t take away from the magic of the ceremony!

WHERE IN ICELAND YOU CAN HAVE A CEREMONY

Iceland is full of tiny cozy churches and bigger churches in cities, so if you’re planning to have a religious ceremony in Iceland, you have what to choose from! From old turf roof churches to modern Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavik!

Many people coming to Iceland because of surreal landscapes which making you feel like you’re on another planet. Literally! That’s where many astronauts were training some time ago before space mission. 

So why don’t get married in one from these places? And you can do it legally anywhere outdoor! 

In Iceland are thousands of waterfalls, black sand beaches, lava fields, glaciers and ice caves and you can get legally married in any of these places! No permit required! (unless it’s a private property)

WHAT KIND OF CEREMONY YOU CAN PLAN FOR YOUR WEDDING IN ICELAND

You can have a ceremony that aligns with your beliefs, whether that be with a religious priest, a humanist officiant,  commissioner, or even a certified Pagan chieftain for a traditional Pagan Asatru ceremony. Any of these are for 100% legal in Iceland! 

And if you’re interested in a traditional Pagan ceremony, you’re in luck! Only in Iceland, Denmark, and Norway does the Pagan religion have the same rights as other religions.

This unique Asatru ceremony includes a blessing of the area, reading of selected verses from the Edda Prose, and the couple exchanging vows while holding a brass ring and drinking mead from a Viking horn.

Same-sex marriages are legal and celebrated in Iceland, making it one of the most welcoming countries for the LGBTQ+ community! Iceland’s beautiful landscape provides the perfect backdrop for your special day, and with same-sex marriages legal since 2010 Iceland embrace all sexualities. The LGBTQ+ culture in Iceland is thriving and discrimination against sexualities is not tolerated.
