WHERE ARE FAROE ISLANDS?

The Faroe Islands are an archipelago, a group of 18 major islands (and several smaller ones), just in the middle in the North Atlantic Ocean. They’re located approximately halfway between Norway and Iceland, about 200 miles northwest of mainland Scotland. Although geographically closer to these countries, the Faroe Islands are an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. They cover a total area of approximately 1,400 square kilometers and boast a population of just over 50,000 people.

The islands are renowned for their stunning natural beauty, featuring rugged cliffs, deep fjords, cascading waterfalls, and a rich array of wildlife, making them a unique and desirable location for adventure elopements.

HOW TO GET TO FAROE ISLANDS?

Getting to the Faroe Islands, although located in the remote North Atlantic, is more straightforward than one might expect. There are two primary ways to reach this beautiful archipelago: by air or by sea.

1. By Air: The most common and quickest way to reach the Faroe Islands is by plane. Vágar Airport (FAE) is the only airport in the Faroe Islands. If you’ll be traveling from USA you can expect to have connecting flight in Europe (you can spend an extra 1-2 days in city you always wanted to visit!)

  • From Denmark: There are regular direct flights to Vágar Airport from Copenhagen operated by Atlantic Airways, the national airline of the Faroe Islands, and SAS (Scandinavian Airlines). The flight duration is approximately 2 hours.
  • From other countries: Atlantic Airways also operates seasonal flights from several cities in Europe, including Edinburgh, Paris, Barcelona, and Reykjavik. Alternatively, you can fly to one of the Scandinavian capitals (Copenhagen, Oslo, or Reykjavik) and take a connecting flight to the Faroe Islands.

2. By Sea: If you prefer a slower pace of travel, you can take a ferry to the Faroe Islands. The Smyril Line operates a ferry service onboard the Norröna. The ferry route connects Denmark (Hirtshals) to the Faroe Islands (Tórshavn) and then to Iceland (Seyðisfjörður).

  • From Denmark: The ferry journey from Hirtshals, Denmark to Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, takes about 36 hours. The ferry departs Denmark once or twice a week, depending on the season. This option offers an adventurous and scenic route, with potential sightings of sea life and breathtaking ocean views.
  • From Iceland: The ferry journey from Seyðisfjörður, Iceland to Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, takes about 19 hours. The ferry departs Iceland once a week.

Remember to check visa requirements before you travel to the Faroe Islands. Although the islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark, they are not part of the Schengen Area, so different entry requirements may apply. It’s also important to book your transportation in advance, especially during the summer tourist season, to secure your preferred travel dates.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO ELOPE IN THE FAROE ISLANDS

While the Faroe Islands are breathtakingly beautiful all year round, the best time to elope would be during summer (June to August) when the weather is warmer and days are longer. This period offers the perfect conditions for outdoor ceremonies and exploration.

Spring (March to May): Spring in the Faroe Islands is a time of rejuvenation. The islands awaken from their winter slumber, and the landscapes are awash with the vibrant hues of blossoming flowers. This period offers mild weather and fewer tourists, providing an intimate and serene setting for your elopement. If you fancy a picturesque backdrop of verdant hills dotted with newborn lambs and birds nesting, spring is the ideal season.

Summer (June to August): Summer is traditionally considered the best time to elope in the Faroe Islands. The weather is warmest during these months, and you can expect long daylight hours, often stretching up to 19 hours per day! The stunning landscapes are at their lushest, and there’s an aura of vibrancy and life everywhere. Outdoor ceremonies and exploration are most convenient during this period, making summer a popular choice for elopements.

Autumn (September to November): If you’re fond of autumnal colors, eloping in the Faroe Islands during fall will offer a stunning canvas of orange, yellow, and red as the foliage changes. The weather cools down and becomes more unpredictable, adding a dramatic and cozy feel to your special day. Fewer tourists during this period also mean more privacy and the possibility of discounted accommodation rates.

Winter (December to February): While the winter months in the Faroe Islands can be challenging due to colder temperatures and limited daylight hours, they offer their own kind of magical charm. Imagine saying your vows against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains and frost-kissed landscapes, with the Northern Lights dancing in the sky above. A winter elopement is perfect for couples who aren’t afraid of a little cold and crave a truly unique and mystical experience.

Remember, no matter the season you choose for your Faroe Islands elopement, each brings its unique beauty! The most important thing is that it aligns with your vision for your special day.

DRESSING FOR THE FAROE ISLANDS WEATHER

The weather in the Faroe Islands is famously unpredictable, with the possibility of experiencing all four seasons in a single day. Thus, when packing for your trip, it’s important to be prepared for various weather conditions. Here’s a guide to help you dress appropriately for your Faroe Islands adventure:

1. Layer Up! Given the variability of the weather, layering is key. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep you dry. Add a warm middle layer like a fleece or wool sweater, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.

2. Waterproof Outerwear: Rain is common in the Faroe Islands, regardless of the season. A good waterproof jacket and rain pants can keep you dry during sudden showers. Don’t forget waterproof shoes or boots, especially if you plan on hiking.
